The Ontario Tire Stewardship Student Design Challenge
Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) is a province-wide scrap tire solution that diverts used tires away from burning and land filling, and turns them into new recycled products.
To help stimulate the recycled Ontario rubber industry, we created a Student Design Challenge, attracting post-secondary design students from across the province. The mission: to ignite creativity and innovation in sustainability while showcasing the aesthetics, functionality and high performance of these tire-derived products to the next generation of up-and-coming design leaders.
Two challenges were offered: one in landscape design to redesign a high profile Toronto location, and another in industrial design to design a new product using recycled rubber. Students could enter one or both challenges and the winning concepts received an investment towards manufacture and influenced real construction while maximizing the principles of sustainable design.
Over the past four years, we’ve worked with winning teams to transform the outdoor landscapes of Evergreen Brickworks, the Central YMCA and Artscape Youngplace in the West Queen West neighbourhood.
